Join us for a scientific seminar with Javier Pizzaro-Cerda, Associate Professor and Head of the Yersinia Unit at the Institut Pasteur and Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Plague:

130th Anniversary of the Discovery of Yersinia Pestis in Hong Kong

A 21st Century Perspective on the Legacy of Alexandre Yersin

Date: Thursday 5 December 2024

Time: 15:30 - 17:30

Venue: 3SR-Lecture Theatre 1

1/F, No. 3 Sassoon Road

In 1894, Alexandre Yersin identifies in Hong Kong the bacterial agent responsible for plague.

Since then, the Pasteurian school of microbiology has made significant contributions to our understanding of plague, identifying its vector-borne nature as well as contributing to the development of vaccines.

Today, the revolution of ancient DNA allow us to revisit plague pandemics from prehistorical times and to investigate the impact of medieval plague on the evolution of the human immune system.

In the post-COVID context, plague is still a relevant and fascinating disease that has still a lot to teach concerning pathogen emergence and evolution.

This scientific seminar benefits from a special sponsorship of the Legion d'Honneur Club Hong Kong Chapter.
